THE MITCHELL CASE AND COSTS: IN THE NEWS AGAIN
My apologies for relying on a non-legal source. However the BBC reports that Mr Mitchell has been ordered to pay both sets of costs in the defamation action.
BBC News reports a decision of Mr Justice Mitting that Mr Mitchell must pay both the costs of the newspaper and the police officer in the defamation action that was unsuccessful (for Mr Mitchell) but successful for PC Rowland.
REJECTION OF AN OFFER
The report states that an offer was made in September that both sides resolve the matter with “no comment” and no order for costs. At that stage the Sun’s costs stood at £500,000.
That offer was rejected by Mr Mitchell. The judge is reported as deciding that Mr Mitchell should pay both sets of costs and that the rejection of the offer was “determinative of the issue”.
Mr Mitchell was ordered to pay the costs of the hearing and a further interim payment of £25,000 in relation to costs.
