Job Description

Hammersmith and Fulham Law Centre is vibrant law centre located in central Hammersmith. We provide people in need with legal advice and representation and give support and training to other community groups. We aim to help to overcome the obstacles faced by those most disadvantaged who need access to the legal system.

We have a 39-year history of providing an excellent service to the community. Our patron is Lady Hale, president of the Supreme Court, and our Director won the outstanding achievement award at the Legal Aid Lawyer of the year Awards 2017.

There will be an opportunity to work in each of the three units: Housing, Asylum and Immigration and the Child Poverty Unit which is led by a solicitor who was formerly a Justice First Fellow. We hope to keep the trainee solicitor in post after qualification.

The post holder will be able to gain advocacy experience through case work, the housing court duty scheme and representation at the First Tier Tribunal. There will be an opportunity to engage with our outreach work which is located in Foodbanks, Southall Black Sisters, West London Welcome and we work with Riverhouse and Hibiscus to improve access to justice for our clients.

Our housing work aims to reduce homelessness, debt and poverty and to keep people in their homes. Our immigration team predominately work with young asylum seekers, as well as representing vulnerable victims of domestic violence and trafficking. Our Child Poverty Unit challenges DWP decision making and provides representation at tribunal.

We have a public law legal aid contract which enables us to develop the strategic litigation and to target cases to challenge in the High Court. There will also be an opportunity to develop your campaigning skills.

We believe that the client’s voice sits at the heart of the work we do.
